Temporal and spatial assessment of gaseous elemental mercury concentrations and emissions at contaminated sites using active and passive measurements

چکیده

Abstract Gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations and emissions at legacy contaminated sites represent poorly characterised components of global (Hg) inventories. Here we apply both active (Tekran 2537A) passive (MerPAS) sampling methods to comprehensively assess GEM across four dimensions (three spatial, one temporal) a site with elevated soil Hg. Concentrations are measured up 37.4 (active) 10.8 (passive) ng m ?3 , which represents enhancements 23× 7× above background (1.62 ), respectively. Temporal resolution the defines this difference (active: 5-min; passive: 44 days). Diurnal concentration patterns were highest in areas night when low wind speeds compress boundary layer. Passive substantially improves spatial characterisation horizontally (highest Hg) vertically (improved vertical gradient using telescopic towers). sampler deployments used generate estimate (landfill-to-atmosphere) 1.2 ± 0.6 kg yr ?1 (or 310 150 ?2 h ). This study demonstrates how combining (strength: temporal assessment) assessments) evaluation atmosphere Hg dimensions.

Global concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury and reactive gaseous mercury in the marine boundary layer.

Gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) were measured during an eight month circumnavigation to obtain knowledge of their worldwide distributions in the marine boundary layer (MBL). Background GEM concentrations were found to be 1.32 ± 0.2 ng/m(3) (summer) and 2.62 ± 0.4 ng/m(3) (spring) in the northern hemisphere and 1.27 ± 0.2 ng/m(3) (spring and summer) in the sout...

Spatial and temporal distribution of gaseous elemental mercury in Chongqing, China.

In order to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of atmospheric mercury (Hg) in Chongqing, China, gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) was measured from August 2006 to September 2007, using Lumex multifunctional mercury analyzer RA-915(+) (Lumex Ltd., Russia). The mean GEM concentration was 6.74 +/- 0.37 ng m(-3) in Chongqing, much higher than the accepted global background values (1.5-2...
